KCC | FAQs

Who should call the consultation line?

Any Kansas physician, clinician, healthcare provider, or professional treating or working with a pregnant or postpartum individual. If you are calling on behalf of a physician or advanced practice clinician on your team, please let us know at the time of the call.

What services are available through the consultation line?

As with all psychiatric access programs in the Health Consultation and Resource Network, KCC provides the following services:

  • Psychiatric consultations with an expert psychiatry team
  • Resources and referral support
  • Free training and technical assistance services
  • Information about best practices, recommendations and research, and Medicaid billing and reimbursement guidance

What happens when I call?

Just call 1-800-332-6262 (or use the web form), Monday-Friday, 8:00 AM-5:00 PM. Your request will be answered by the KCC Resource and Referral Specialist, who will gather information to assess what is needed to best support you and your patient and help determine the best next steps.

For example, the Resource & Referral Specialist could provide resources, help you identify and connect with appropriate referral options, or schedule a time for you to meet with a member of the psychiatric consultation team for more support.

No protected health information (PHI) or patient personally identifiable information (PII) will be collected by our team.

How quickly can I expect a response?

All requests receive an initial response within one business day. We can typically schedule a teleconsultation with the psychiatric consultation team within two business days.

The KCC team observes all national and state holidays. Requests and calls made on a holiday or outside of the consultation line operating hours will be returned the next business day.

Do you provide services directly to patients?

No. While we are working toward better outcomes for perinatal individuals, our primary goal is to support physicians, clinicians, and other care professionals.

Treatment for many perinatal behavioral health conditions can be safely managed in a primary care or obstetrics setting, especially with access to expert consultation through the Consultation Line. This allows the patient to remain under the care of the physicians and clinicians they know and trust.

My patient is in Kansas, but I am not. Can I still access KCC services?

KCC is part of a nationwide network of psychiatric access programs, all working to increase access to perinatal mental health care. We collaborate closely with the programs in states that border Kansas.

If you are in Colorado or Missouri and your patient lives in Kansas, please call the program in your state and let them know your patient resides in Kansas.

To reduce your workload and allow you to focus your energy on patient care, their team will collaborate directly with our team to ensure that referral options and resources best meet the needs of your patient in their home state.

Can I receive crisis support through the consultation line?

The consultation line is not a crisis line. For behavioral health emergency services, please call 988 or go to the nearest emergency department.

I am a patient. Can I get services through the consultation line?

If you’re an individual who is pregnant or postpartum and struggling with mental health or substance use, we want you to know that you’re not alone and help is available. You can access 24-7 support by calling or texting the National Maternal Mental Health Hotline at 1-833-TLC-MAMA (1-833-852-6262).

You can also talk to your doctor or other health care professional, provide them with our information, and ask them to request a consultation or referral support on your behalf.

If you are in immediate danger or think that you might hurt yourself or someone else, please call 988 or go to your nearest emergency department.
