Many adults who have a substance use disorder started using substances in their teenage years. In fact, Kansas teens aged 15 - 17 represented 69% of drug - related deaths 2017 - 2021.1 There are many factors such as family history, Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs), youth homelessness, mental health problems, parental separation, incarceration of a family member and more that are associated with youth substance use disorder.
It is important that health care providers offer education to younger patients and their families, review safe prescribing practices and consider alternative treatments to substance misuse where appropriate. If necessary, these providers can conduct universal substance use screening for adolescents and connect them with treatment.
